Product details
| Product Features | Details:Old stock Cloud Mountain turquoise in sterling silver setting by Artisan Silversmith, Robert Beauford. About the Gemstone: The Cloud Mountain (or Hanging Cloud) mine, called 'Yungai' (also: Yungaishi or Yun Gai Temple Mine) by the local people, is located in the sacred Wudang Mountains, in Yun County, China. The area is one of the oldest turquoise sources on the planet. The gemstone has been produced from the mountains for over 1000 years, with production recorded since at least the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). It was the source of much of the turquoise used in early dynastic Chinese art. The Wudang Mountains are a pilgrimage location, known as one of the 4 Sacred Mountains of Taoism, & are home to several important Taoist temples & monasteries (several miles south of the old gem mining area) that have become UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Turquoise is an important part of the local culture, arts, & economy. The small mountain range is also the birthplace of the Wudang martial arts styles & of T'ai Chi Ch'üan, or Tai Chi. This is an old-stock stone, mined in the 1990s. I hope you enjoy wearing it as much as I enjoyed making the setting. Thanks! - About the Artist: I have been designing & hand crafting silver & gold jewelry for over 25 years, & generally work from my small studio in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. I've made thousands of pieces of jewelry in my lifetime, continuing artisan traditions in wood, fabric, metal, & stone that go back many generations in my family, to our Irish & Scottish ancestors. My work has appeared in several dozen galleries & has been featured several times in publications. Gems & minerals are a passion for me. When not behind the counter at my studio, I create two-dimensional artwork (drawings & paintings), & write about rocks & minerals, drawing upon my background as a research scientist. I studied archaeology at Southern Methodist University, in Texas, & completed a PhD in geoscience (Space & Planetary Science) in Arkansas, & still do some scientific work in earth science fields. My science background strongly influences my jewelry work, inspiring my passion for contemporary & historical metal work artistry as well as for the stones!
